Hyde Park Recycles

By recycling much of your waste, you will:

Reduce costs for solid waste removal, thereby helping to lower your condo fee

Contribute to conservation and reduced pollution and global warming

Recycling at Hyde Park is easy – deposit approved materials in the bins in the trash room nearest your unit. The bin on the floor beyond the trash chute is for newspapers; the taller one next to it is for glass, aluminum and steel cans, and plastic containers. For home-office workers, you can also recycle your discarded printouts, letterhead, and other forms of office white paper by placing these materials in the newspaper bin. More detailed recycling guidelines are listed below. If in doubt, whether to deposit materials or not, look on the bottom of the jar or plastic container. Materials appropriate for recycling show a symbol consisting of three bent arrows forming a circle.

RECYCLING and DISPOSAL OF WASTE

Did you know there are many places to recycle or donate items? You do not just have to throw it away.

·        Furniture in good condition  - Call Arlingtonians Meeting Emergency Needs, Inc (AMEN) at (703) 558-0035. They will pick up your items and donate to needy families.  In addition, you will receive a tax deduction.

·        Old Cell phones and Eyeglasses – There are boxes at the Arlington fire stations that collect these items for charities. The nearest fire station is located at 4805 Wilson Blvd (just east of George Mason Drive).

·        Batteries – Non-alkaline batteries may be recycled in the orange container behind the fire station. Alkaline batteries may be discarded in the regular trash.

·        CFC and fluorescent light bulbs – While the CFC light bulbs will last 5 times longer than incandescent light bulbs, when they burn out they need to be recycled, since they contain a small amount of mercury.  Home Depot accepts them for recycling or take them to the Arlington Hazmat Center.

·        Remodeling - Did you know that for Habitat for Humanity recycles material at its ReStore retail locations – nearest location is in Alexandria. Please call (703) 360-6700 for more information.

·         Refrigerators, stoves, dishwashers, counter tops, sinks, etc – When not recycling, arrange with your contractor to have them haul it away. Or, if you have purchased it from a store, arrange with the store to haul away and dispose of the old appliance(s).

·        Junk – Call 1-800-Got-Junk – their prices are reasonable.

·        Hazardous Material such as paint, rechargeable batteries, etc. – Arlington’s’ Household Hazardous Material site at 3155 S. Fern Street accepts collections every Saturday from 9 to 3.

Arlington County has many links on their web site (www. arlingtonva.us) to worthy charities, which accept donations for a wide variety of items.

Hyde Park was one of the first high-rises in Arlington County to initiate a recycle program. We did it long before it was required.  You may recycle plastic bottles, metal cans, glass containers and newspapers in all the trash rooms.  Please rinse out the bottles before placing in the containers. No rabbit ear antennas, aerosal spray cans, pie tins, those plastic air fresheners, garden pots or cooking pots need apply.

The trash container in the mailroom has been repurposed as a recycle place for mixed paper only. Please continue to discard your unwanted mail in this container, but do Not discard material other than paper in this container.

Please do NOT place items on the loading dock for disposal.  Disposal of large items, such as sofas, chairs, desks, cabinets, etc is NOT a free service offered by Hyde Park.  Hyde Park has to pay a special hauler to come haul it away, and has to pay landfill and dumping fees.  If you have not arranged for disposal, you may contact the office and pay for the charges for hauling it away.

Thank you for recycling
